Confidence & Ego

I touched lightly upon this in my year-end reflections post for 2014 but I didn’t let on to all the insight I really had.

Observation has been a major source of learning for me on the refereeing journey. As you get the opportunity to assist referees further along the journey and hierarchy than you, you get to see some of the qualities that make them successful.

“Body language is your greatest tool… or your worst nightmare”

It begins here.

Other Refereeing Movies

This post is a sequel to Kill the Referee.

This is a nice documentary to watch, El Arbitro, because it really delves into the league season and progress of a FIFA Referee in La Liga. It goes into far more depth of a referee’s life in one of the world’s most competitive leagues and how it runs over the season. Credit goes to my friend JVN for referring me to this.

Referee Coin Toss (Part 4): Teamwork

My last three posts on coin tosses have been about some of the good points and tips we can learn from a well-executed coin toss. Now we can take a look at a different perspective.

Hong Kong Referee put out a great post on teamwork (or rather a lack of) by a referee’s actions in the FIFA World Cup Finals. Body language and facial expressions play an important role too!

Referee Coin Toss: A Case Study

First impressions. They last. Unfortunately if you don’t make a good one, it’s hard to repair it again unless you can truly impress. Referees are constantly forming first impressions for players when we arrive at a new field, a new game and a new team. This quite often starts at the coin toss where we call on the captains.

Having watched a fair amount of televised matches, I came across one of my favourite executions of a coin toss in a UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final match between AC Milan and FC Barcelona at the San Siro on 28th March 2012. The referees in charge of this match included Referee Jonas Eriksson assisted by Stefan Wittberg, Mathias Klasenius, Strombergsson and Stefan Johannesson; the Swedish UEFA elite referee crew.

The raw video file of the toss is below.
